WhatsApp Usernames: Privacy, Rules, and How to Reserve Yours

For most of its life, WhatsApp treated a phone number as both the account credential and the address other people used to find you. Usernames split those jobs. Your account still needs a number, but an optional @username can become the identity you share with a new client, classmate, neighbor, group, or online community.

That is a meaningful privacy improvement, not anonymity. The details matter: a reserved name is not yet usable, a username does not hide your number from people who already saved it, and a username key adds a second layer only for certain first-time contacts.

Quick answer#

WhatsApp began opening username reservations on June 29, 2026, ahead of a gradual launch later in the year. If the option has reached your account, open Settings, select your profile, then choose Create username or Reserve username. You will receive an in-app notification when a reserved name becomes active.

Once active, a username can let people message or call you without seeing your phone number. There is no public directory: they need your exact username, a username link, or your QR code. You can also enable an optional username key so many first-time contacts need both the name and the key.

Rollout check: If you can reserve a name but cannot yet use it to start a chat, nothing is broken. WhatsApp separates reservation from activation and is enabling the feature gradually by region and account.

What a WhatsApp username changes#

The new model adds a shareable identity between your private account number and the people you meet.

The protection follows one central rule: people who do not already have your number saved see your username instead. WhatsApp says this applies in direct messages, calls, and group chats. Existing contacts who already saved your number continue to see the contact name and number they know.

Creating a username can also remove your number from existing conversations with people who never saved it. Those chats continue normally. For a first conversation, WhatsApp may still show whether a registered number belongs to a different country as a safety signal, without revealing the number itself.

Reservation and activation are different states#

WhatsApp opened reservations early because a service with more than three billion users has many people competing for the same names. Reserving holds the identifier for your account; another person cannot claim that exact name while you hold it.

A reservation does not immediately create a working contact route:

1. The reserved username is not visible to other people.
2. People cannot message or call it yet.
3. Links and QR codes should not be treated as live until activation.
4. WhatsApp sends an in-app notification when the name is ready to use.

This distinction is especially important for creators and businesses. Do not print a reserved handle on packaging, signage, or campaign material until you have tested it from an account that does not already know your number.

How to reserve or create your username#

Keep the official WhatsApp app updated, then use the controls shown on your account:

1. Open Settings on your primary phone.
2. Tap the area around your profile photo.
3. Choose Create username. Where activation is still pending, the label may read Reserve username.
4. Enter your preferred name. WhatsApp confirms availability or can generate alternatives.
5. Tap Save, then Done or Continue, depending on the version.

Meta’s launch announcement summarized the route as Settings → Account → Username, while the current Help Center describes it through your profile. Follow the label in your installed version; staged interfaces can differ.

If the username control is absent, update the app and check again later. Reinstalling, using an unofficial build, or repeatedly changing regions will not reliably move an account forward in a server-side rollout.

WhatsApp username format rules#

WhatsApp’s current Help Center rules are specific:

• Use between 3 and 35 characters.
• Use lowercase letters a–z, numbers 0–9, underscores _, and periods ..
• Do not use numbers alone.
• The username must be unique.
• Restricted words or phrases are not allowed.

Some names are held for businesses, governments, or public figures. If your first choice is unavailable, that does not always mean an ordinary account claimed it.

You may be able to claim the same username used on Instagram or Facebook by placing WhatsApp in the same Accounts Center—currently being renamed Meta Account—provided the name is still available. Linking accounts is optional. A later Instagram or Facebook username change does not automatically update WhatsApp.

Choose a name for privacy, not just recognition#

A good username is easy for the intended people to type but not unnecessarily revealing. Avoid combining a full legal name, birth year, employer, and location. That bundle makes the identifier memorable for strangers too.

For a private account, consider a stable nickname plus a non-sensitive word. For a public-facing account, consistency across platforms may be worth more than obscurity, but publish it only in places where you genuinely want inbound messages.

How people find you without a directory#

WhatsApp is not turning usernames into a social discovery graph. There is no browsable directory and no “people you may know” suggestion flow for usernames. To start a conversation, someone needs one of three routes:

• your complete, exact username;
• a direct wa.me/YourUsername link; or
• a QR code that resolves to your username.

Exact-match discovery reduces casual lookup, but it does not make a published handle secret. A username posted on an open social profile can be copied, indexed elsewhere, or impersonated with small spelling variations. Treat the audience for the place where you publish it as the audience that may try to contact you.

Your display name remains separate. It does not have to be unique and appears in your profile and chat. The username is unique, begins with @, and functions as the contact identifier.

Add a username key for stronger contact control#

A username key is an optional WhatsApp-generated code. When it is enabled, many people who have never contacted you must provide both the exact username and the key before sending the first message.

Think of the username as the address and the key as a small gate in front of it. You can share both with a person you want to hear from, then change or remove the key later.

A key is generally not required when the person:

• already has your phone number saved;
• has previously chatted with you;
• shares a group with you;
• scanned your QR code; or
• received a message from you first.

Those exceptions make the key useful for controlling cold contact, not for revoking established relationships. Existing conversations continue even if you add a key. WhatsApp also says it will not notify you when somebody fails to reach you because they do not know the key.

Key creation currently belongs on the primary mobile device, not WhatsApp Web or Desktop. Accounts connected to another Meta account that identifies the user as under 18 may have the key enabled by default.

What usernames do not change#

The feature changes introduction and visibility, but it does not replace the account’s foundation.

• You still need a phone number. The username is not a phone-number-free signup method.
• Known numbers remain known. A contact who saved your number does not forget it when you create a username.
• The number can still reach you. Someone who already has it can continue to contact you through it.
• Encryption is a separate property. A username changes how a person is identified; it does not replace WhatsApp’s chat encryption or account security controls.
• It is not proof of identity. A plausible handle does not guarantee that the person behind it is genuine.

If you need to cut off contact, use block and report. Changing a username alone is not a reliable substitute, especially for people who already know your number or share a group with you.

Changing, deleting, and reporting usernames#

WhatsApp lets you change or delete an active username, but there are consequences. Changes are rate-limited, and an old name may become available to somebody else. After deletion, the Help Center currently describes a 14-day window to reclaim the old username before it can be released.

Before changing a public handle, update links, QR codes, bios, support templates, and printed material. Test the new route from an unrelated account. An abandoned username can create both broken links and an impersonation opportunity.

WhatsApp prohibits buying, selling, or trading usernames. If an account uses a similar name to impersonate you, or a message tied to a username looks like a scam, report the account and suspicious conversation in WhatsApp. Similar spellings can exist even though exact usernames are unique.

A practical privacy setup#

Use this five-minute sequence once usernames become active on your account:

1. Pick a username that reveals no more personal information than necessary.
2. Enable a username key if you publish the handle beyond a small trusted group.
3. Share a QR code in person and a direct link only on surfaces where you want inbound contact.
4. Ask one trusted person who has not saved your number to test what they can see.
5. Review profile photo, About, group, call, and privacy settings separately; a hidden number does not make every profile field private.

Then decide which identity belongs in each context. A private personal handle can be intentionally hard to guess. A creator or business handle can prioritize consistency and recognizability. The important change is choice: a phone number no longer has to be the first piece of identity you hand to every new conversation.
